Lighting is essential in this digital era. It is in this regard that most lighting companies are ever looking for new ways and technologies that can make their products even better with low energy consumption. They are working tooth and nail to ensure that they develop smart lighting systems that can meet people’s lighting needs in this digital era.

As technology advances, the Majority of the present incandescent Light bulbs are almost getting obsolete. There are two upcoming lighting technologies that are poised to replace incandescent light bulbs the soonest and these are light emitting diodes (LEDs) and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). In the last few years, LED technology have experienced impressive gains which have seen a great improvement in the effectiveness of LED lighting products.

There is a compelling urge for lighting industry players to take keen research and development initiatives in their lighting products. This will help them define key areas that require improvement. Most of the major areas that require improvement include; innovative packaging, color stability, product reliability and life, power supplies, and value addition.

It is common knowledge that if lighting industry players particularly in LED technology put more capabilities in packaging, they are likely to create the most cost effective products. The functionality of LED luminaire should be embedded with a chip to make it cost effective and much more efficient. There should be more research and development on how to bring the conventional packaging architecture into chip level.

There is need to shift LED power supplies from the conventional fragile components such as electrolytic capacitors to more robust GaN-based power electronics that are smaller, cheaper and efficient. Basing more research and development on the reliability of individual parts and testing their lifetime would be more beneficial. The lighting industry key players must take more emphasis on the evolution of further lighting metrics which may forecast and detect failures which might occur in the lighting fixtures. They should also develop products that are resistant to power surges so as to avoid the aberrations which are brought on by such surges.

Color shift in lighting fixtures has been a big issue in the lighting technology. There’s need for the lighting industry to develop product which has color equilibrium, are reliable and longer-lasting. There’s more that should be done in order to have an extensive understanding of the very acceptable color changes and mechanisms in lighting.

With all these in mind, most light companies can develop products which satisfy the present needs in lighting technology. Therefore, product development and management should take center stage in lighting companies if they ever want to keep in line with the ever improving technology.
