LILONGWE, Malawi — Standard Bank Malawi has announced plans to decommission its Unayo payments platform effective October 31, 2025, as part of a strategic shift to enhance its existing digital banking ecosystem, writes Winston Mwale.

The move aligns with similar transitions underway across other African markets where Unayo operates.

According to the bank, the decision reflects a broader strategy to deepen the bank’s presence in the digital payments space through its 247 Digital Banking ecosystem.

Between June 2025 and the effective closure date, Standard Bank has been facilitating what it describes as a “seamless transition” for customers, merchants, and partners to other digital payment solutions available within its network.

Unayo was launched in Malawi in September 2021, positioning itself as an inclusive financial platform that provided access to digital financial services for individuals and small businesses, including those without traditional bank accounts.

Speaking on the development, Tamanda N’gombe, Head of Brand and Marketing at Standard Bank, said the decision followed extensive consultation and review.

“Our immediate priority is to ensure a seamless transition for all affected clients, merchants, and partners,” she said.

“A comprehensive closure plan was designed to minimize any disruption, including clear communication, guidance on alternative solutions, and the necessary support.”

N’gombe emphasized that the bank’s choice to sunset Unayo came after “weighty and comprehensive consideration” of stakeholder feedback, usage trends, and long-term innovation goals.

“We would like to reassure all our stakeholders that this decision will not deter Standard Bank Malawi from exploring new and more innovative solutions that will continue to benefit communities, businesses, and many others,” she said.

She added that Standard Bank remains committed to driving national progress through digital transformation.

“Standard Bank remains deeply committed to the success of this nation and will continue to be guided by our purpose — Driving Malawi’s Growth,” N’gombe said.

Customers who previously used Unayo are being encouraged to migrate to the bank’s other digital channels, including mobile banking, internet banking, and 24/7 digital payment solutions.
