The United States Postal Service and all major banks will close for a full 24 hours on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, in observance of Veterans Day. The federal holiday will bring a temporary pause in mail delivery, in-person banking, and several government services.

Here’s what’s closing, what’s staying open, and how to avoid last-minute disruptions.

USPS closures on November 11

USPS confirmed that all 33,000+ post offices will shut down for the holiday. That means:

  • No mail delivery
  • No package pickup or retail services
  • No sorting or distribution

Operations are scheduled to resume Wednesday, November 12. While USPS is part of the federal holiday system, the agency clarified that it won’t be impacted by any government shutdowns since it operates independently.

All major banks will close for the day

Large financial institutions, including:

  • Wells Fargo
  • Chase
  • Bank of America
  • US Bank
  • Citibank
  • Capital One
  • Citizens Bank

…have confirmed branch closures on November 11. While lobbies will be closed, ATMs and digital banking services will remain accessible. However, deposits or transfers may not process until the next business day.

Wells Fargo has listed Veterans Day as one of four remaining 2025 closures—along with Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

Plan ahead to avoid banking delays

Veterans Day closures can catch people off guard, especially if bills or transfers are due. Here’s how to prepare:

  • Check cut-off times: Most banks have earlier processing deadlines before a holiday
  • Use digital banking: Mobile apps and online platforms will stay live
  • Make payments early: Pay rent or bills at least 1–2 days ahead
  • Update login info: Ensure you can access your online accounts during the closure

AARP noted that “digital banking remains open regardless of what America is celebrating that day.”

What else is closed—and what’s open

Besides USPS and banks, many federal offices, courthouses, and schools will close for Veterans Day. However:

  • Stock markets will remain open (Veterans Day is not a market holiday)
  • Grocery stores and pharmacies like Walmart, Target, and CVS will generally stay open
  • Restaurants and retailers may operate on limited hours, and many will offer discounts to veterans

Veterans Day is the second federal holiday in November, following Columbus Day and preceding Thanksgiving, which falls on Thursday, November 27 this year.

What is Veterans Day?

Veterans Day honors U.S. military veterans and has been observed on November 11 since 1954. Communities across the country mark the day with:

  • Parades
  • Flag ceremonies
  • Community events and school programs

It’s one of 11 federal holidays when both the USPS and banking services pause nationwide.
